Chevrolet made headlines last year when it announced that it would equip its modern medium-duty and heavy-duty truck lineups with Allison transmissions. Just in case you missed the news, we’re here to catch you up.

You might be asking yourself, “What’s the big deal? What exactly are the benefits of an Allison transmission for my Chevy?” Continue reading to find out.

Popular Chevy Truck Models With an Allison Transmission

What is an Allison transmission, anyway?

For over a century, Allison transmissions have built a global reputation for being extremely durable. That’s why they’re cheaper to operate than comparable vehicles. The low minimum maintenance requirements result in cheaper overall maintenance costs.

They’re also stronger. The Allison 1000 six-speed transmission of today is the only transmission that can keep up with Chevrolet’s Duramax® Turbo-Diesel engine option. Using adaptive learning technology, Allison transmissions provide a comfortable driving experience and help you avoid any rough shifting experiences.

Now that you know a little bit about Allison transmissions let’s talk about the trucks.

The 2018 Chevy Silverado 2500HD

When you opt for the 445-horsepower Duramax® 6.6L Turbo-Diesel V8 engine option, you’ll benefit from a standard Allison 1000 transmission. When paired together, these two high-performing parts enable the 2018 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD to tow up to 18,100 pounds.

The 2018 Chevy Silverado 3500HD

The king of Chevy’s heavy-duty lineup can tow up to 23,000 pounds and generate 910 lb.-ft. of torque when it’s stocked with a Duramax® Turbo-Diesel engine. If you’ve made it this far, you can probably guess what that means: The Allison 1000 comes as part of the package on the 2018 Chevy Silverado 3500HD. This transmission adjusts shift clutch pressure to match engine torque and vehicle load to maximize durability and drivability.

With a powerhouse transmission to back up such robust engines, is it any wonder Chevrolet’s HD trucks have been named “Most Dependable Large Heavy Duty Pickup” by J.D. Power three years in a row?*
