If you’re going to claim to be in it for the long haul, you better be one of the most rugged and resilient vehicles on the road. With a legacy of excellence that dates back a century, the 2018 Chevy Silverado 1500 fits that bill to a tee. A towing machine, this full-size pickup truck can pull a whopping, best-in-class 12,500 lbs. when properly equipped.
But how exactly does it do the trick? Keep reading our vehicle spotlight to find out.
How the 2018 Silverado 1500 Hauls Best-in-class Numbers
Performance
You don’t get to be able to tow over six tons without packing some serious muscle. The 2018 Chevy Silverado 1500 brings three strapping engine options to the table, with the available 420-horsepower 6.2L EcoTec3 V8 standing at the top of the line. This engine generates an extraordinary 460 lb.-ft. of torque, and when combined with the Max Trailering Package, helps the new Silverado 1500 tow 12,500 lbs., more than any in-segment competitor.
But the other selections aren’t too shabby, either. The 5.3L V8 and 4.3L V6 engine options can tow up to 11,100 lbs. and 7,600 lbs. respectively.
Design
There’s nothing light-duty about the Silverado 1500. Every detail of this full-size truck was chiseled to impress and every inch was designed to dominate — from the high-strength steel frame to the hydraulic body mounts and trailering mirrors. But the Silverado 1500 was engineered for more than just towing. With the CornerStep rear bumper and available EZ Lift & Lower tailgate, it can take on smaller projects, too.
Safety
Having the strength to get the job done only takes you so far. It means nothing if you can’t accomplish your goals safely. That’s why it’s a good thing that the 2018 Silverado 1500 makes towing easier than before.
The available EchoMaster® Trailering Camera System provides access for up to four cameras that help eliminate blind spots and enhance your vision when maneuvering and backing up. And just in case that’s not enough, Stabilitrak® with Trailer Sway Control technology automatically detects a veering trailer and applies brakes to get things back in line.
